Type of Project: The visitor centre by SIPS EcoBuild is a public building incorporating shop, kitchen, cafe bar, toilets and viewing area. This project was constructed using SIPS as a semi-circular extension to the main Vinery complete with a sloping roof. The visitor centre will act as a meeting point for vineyard tours and wine tasting and will also serve locally prepared food and drink.
Location: The young but successful Holmfirth Vineyard is situated high in the Holme Valley near Holmfirth. Its exposed position allows visitors to enjoy spectacular views.
The Project Brief: SIPS EcoBuild was tasked with completing a visitor centre within strict time and budgetary constraints in an exposed and difficult location. High above Holmfirth in ‘Last of The Summer Wine’ country the site is very exposed and subject to extreme weather and high winds so careful consideration was required within the design. Limited site access, inaccessible to lifting plant, meant structural insulated panels were the perfect solution; the light-weight SIPS were able to be man handled on site. Our video shows the simple and dramatic progress of the hill-top build.
A SIPS Solution On-site: A simple wall, 3.5m high was constructed against the Vinery outer wall which provided independence and a means of discreetly housing the structural posts. Each SIPs panel was bespoke and the building has been held down by means of an ingenious bolting system. The sloping roof would have proved difficult for other building systems to accommodate, but working with SIPS meant we could construct a striking Glulam Beam framework to carry the 7.5m wide radius spans of the sloping roof. Simple secondary purlins were fitted prior to the 150mm SIPS roof panel installation. We then wrapped the entire building in a membrane. The works were substantially carried out in seven working days. The building has been clad in local stone and rendered panels to enhance the aesthetics of the building as a piece of local architecture. Clever detailing and positioning of windows has created a spectacular curving hill-top building from a multi-faceted structure from where to enjoy the vineyard and the surrounding views. The large spaces created within the building mean it can be used for a variety of purposes including conferences, meetings, dining and entertaining.
